Announcement
It is with deep regret that I have to announce that Des Cobley passed away on 22nd January 2013 at the age of 91years. I was privileged to have met him last year on a number of occasions at his home and met his devoted wife Pam. He made a couple of contributions to this website, namely a magazine from the early 1950's and a group photograph of the teachers of that era. He leaves two daughters, Jane and Jenny, five grandchildren and a great grandchild.
Does anyone have any information?
The message below has been sent in, can anyone shed any light on it?
Hi there, My husband Robert Lewis also goes by
the name (Butty) used to attend Stow Hill Secondary Modern School
from the year 1960 to 1963 he was in class 3c. He has been very
unwell recently with heart surgery. He hasn't got any pictures of
his class mates. He would like to reconnect with some of the men
who were in his class. Also he lost a very good friend called
'Gloco' (Michael) he left school at 16. He was from
Somerton and he tried to swim across the Usk by Newport bridge
and he drowned. My husband is desperate for any information on
his friend to find out where he is laid to rest etc. Please can
some one get in touch if they have any info
Many thanks
Samantha Lewis
This website is dedicated to the people who attended Stow Hill and Technical Schools. Originally it was aimed at those who attended in the fifties to early sixties, but enquiries have been coming in from former pupils (and some teachers) from other years. With this in mind, this website will undergo some changes to accommodate dedicated pages with pictures as they are supplied. As the name of the school was changed at various periods during it's 'lifetime', these pages will bear the appropriate name(s), but will remain linked centrally around the existing name on this website for ease of identity.
As the website developes and more pages are added, photographs will be included as and when they are supplied. This is where you come in - if you are an ex-pupil and have any photographs showing anything about Stow Hill School, please email them to me. The preferred format is .jpeg or .gif and preferably no larger than 100kb. Please supply any information you can, year, names, places or anything else relevant, and it will be added as soon as possible. If you are unable to scan the photographs in, please contact us to make alternative arrangements with you.
I have added a page already that has a link to a few photographs of some of the people on that Swiss Trip and some of the scenery, with more to follow. There is also a copy of the booklet printed at the time which describes the journey, and contains very useful information relevant to that time. There are a couple of pictures of the boys classes (kindly supplied by Gil Macleod and Bas Cole), please click on the link above to view.
Former pupils of other years have expressed interest, and these will have their own pages added as soon as more details are supplied, but for now the names supplied for 1942-45 are Robert Bale, Arthur Mears, Walter Matson, John Gilmore, and Roy Jenkins. Any more of you out there? Get in touch.
Another 'old boy' from Stow Hill made my acquaintance recently, Steve Oakington was a pupil from 1961-1965 and he extends his greetings and good wishes to all who know him. He also expressed a wish for another of our reunions. If there are any more of you that would like another reunion, please get in touch and I'll arrange one. Meanwhile, if anyone would like to contact Steve (or anyone else from the old school) please get in touch and I'll do what I can through these pages.
